South West School of Swimming Development

The annual South West School of Swimming Development residential course is to take place at Bryanston School in Blandford from 12-18 August 2018. The course is open to swimmers 11 years of age and over at 31 December 2018 and there is no upper age limit on participation. Emphasis of the week is stroke technique and a Team GB swimmer will be in attendance on two days of the programme to work with all the swimmers. There will be specialist lectures in sport psychology, physiology and nutrition, as well as land conditioning and team building. Contrasting activities such as archery, squash and badminton will also be provided as part of the programme. Closing date for applications is 25 May 2018 and cost for the week £400. South West Regional Volunteer of the Month Award

In support of the National Volunteers week Swim England South West has introduced the Volunteer of the Month award to recognise and promote the hard work and dedication our volunteers provide within aquatics clubs in the South West.

The award can be presented to any volunteer from a young or new volunteer just starting out on their volunteering journey to a more established volunteer. Nominations are assessed by a  Volunteer Panel against the following considerations and not all of the elements have to be fulfilled, but the nominee does have to be a member of a Swim England affiliated club.

Consideration is given to whether the nominee has been an inspiration to others (volunteers, participants, members) in the club. Secondly, has successfully used initiative, creativity or innovation in undertaking their volunteer role to have an impact on the club, participants or other volunteers. Thirdly, provided excellent support to others in the club and, finally, achieved impact through determination under challenging circumstances. However long the volunteer has been with the club, be it a few months or a few years, they must have had an impact on the participants, the volunteers or the club.

Members of Dorset clubs have already been acknowledged by Swim England South West, with Alex Meade of Bere Regis SC winning the award in November 2017 and Beth Stannard of Wessex Diving Club in February 2018.

Success at Swim England National Awards 2017

The Swim England National Awards were held in the Great Hall of the University of Birmingham on Saturday 11 November. The event recognises the achievements and contributions of individuals and organisations from all areas of aquatics, and this year resulted in recognition for one Dorset club.

The category of Swim England Performance Club of the Year recognises excellence shown in nurturing high performance aquatic athletes at regional, national and international level with club representation on England Programmes, and a track record of producing national qualifiers and above. Governance, leadership, coach development and collaboration with other clubs is also taken into consideration. Among fierce competition winner of this year’s award was City of Sheffield Diving – but with Poole SC taking the runners-up spot.

Assistant Head Coach, Jan Hutchings, collected the award on behalf of Poole SC which was presented by Olympic swimmer Ellie Faulkner of City of Sheffield.

It was also a good year for the rest of the Swim England South West with the region bringing home a total of seven awards – five first places and two runners-up awards.

New European Masters record for David Hembrow

Littledown Masters’ David Hembrow has become a European Masters record holder after knocking more than half a minute off the previous European 70-74 years record set in 2009 by another British swimmer, Geoff Stokes. The 70 year old veteran of the Mexico Olympic Games in 1968 recorded a short-course 1500m Freestyle time of 21min 40.00 sec at the Swim England National Masters’ Championship held in Sheffield in October.

With a new European Masters record under his belt, David went on to further successes with gold medals in both the 200m and 400m Freestyle events in the 70-74 years age group in 2:35.46 and 5:33.50 respectively, and silver in the 50m and 100m Freestyle with times of 33.15 and 1:12.00.

Littledown Masters’ Nigel Foster and Cathy Hartle, and Poole’s Kath Baker, also made the podium at Ponds Forge. Nigel’s medal haul of five was achieved with gold in the 65-69 years 50m and 200m Backstroke, silver in the 100m Backstroke and 100m Freestyle, and a bronze in the 50m Freestyle. Cathy won silver in the 1500m Freestyle and a bronze in the 800m Freestyle in the 55-59 years age group.

Kath Baker made her mark in the 25-29 years age group 200m Breaststroke and 200m Individual Medley taking gold in both events, together with a silver in the 100m Breaststroke and bronze in the 100m Butterfly.

Success at Sheffield – Dorset to stay in Division One

The Dorset team has achieved its second best ever result at this year’s National County Team Championships in Sheffield by finishing in 14th place while competing against a host of much bigger counties. Known as the “yo-yo” team at the Championships due to placing in either the promotion or relegation zone each year, Dorset last achieved a result ensuring a second consecutive year in Division One in 2009 when the team finished in 12th place.

Finishing just four points behind Scotland East and 20 points clear of Sussex, Dorset was nevertheless 88 points clear of the relegation zone and clocked up a total of 13 top-ten placings. Boys Captain and World Junior Championships finalist Jacob Peters (Poole) provided Dorset’s only race win with a time of 54.22 in the 16/17 years 100m Butterfly, while taking second place in the 100m Backstroke in 54.23. Leading off the Boys 16/17 years Medley relay, Jacob also broke his Dorset Senior SC Record for 50m Backstroke with a time of 25.25. 2017 National Age Group Champion Kayla van der Merwe (BCS) also achieved second place in the 14/15 years 100m Breaststroke with a time of 1:10.49.  

Girls Captain Jasmine McCrea (Poole) placed fourth in the 16/17 years 100m Butterfly (1:02.37) and eighth in the 100m Freestyle with a time of 57.48, breaking the Dorset Junior SC Record set by European Youth Olympics Champion Amelia Maughan in 2009 and repeated as the lead-off of the 6 x 50m cannon with a time of 26.49 which broke Maughan’s 50m Freestyle SC Record, also held since 2009.

There were further top ten placings for Amy Brown (Swim Bournemouth) with fourth in the 12/13 years 100m Breaststroke (1:13.73) and seventh in the 100m Backstroke (1:06.52), Ella Chown (BCS) was fifth in the 14/15 years 100m Butterfly while in the same age group Finn Trehane (BCS) and Oliver Fairman (Poole) were sixth in the Boys 100m Breaststroke (1:06.61) and Boys 100m Backstroke (1:00.26) respectively and Alan Szczasiuk (Swim Bournemouth) placed eighth in the 12/13 years 100m Breaststroke (1:11.65).

The County’s best-placed relay teams were the 16/17 years Boys Medley (Jacob Peters, Kelvin Wong, Christian Tai and Ben Samuel) and Cannon team of Jasmine McCrea, Alan Szczasiuk, Amy Brown, Ella Chown, Finn Trehane and Jacob Peters both of which relay teams finished in seventh place. There was a ninth place for the Boys 14/15 years Medley team of Oliver Fairman, Finn Trehane, Alex Bryan and Sam Small.

Congratulations go to all our swimmers together with team coaches Sam Woodward and Dan Dew, and with thanks to Team Selectors Andy and Sue Smart, and Dorset Officials Tracy Roberts and Nigel Gallimore. Vice-captains were BCS swimmers Charlotte James and Christian Tai.
